Muniz Vik (b. 1961, Brazil) Lives and works in New York City and Rio de Janeiro. Born to a working-class family in São Paulo. Immigrated to the US in 1983, and since then became one of the best known contemporary Brazilian artists. Held numerous solo exhibitions around the world, including at Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, Museu de arte Moderna, Rio de Janeiro and a solo exhibition titled “Pictures of Anything” at Tel Aviv Museum of Art in 2014. In 2001 Muniz represented Brazil at the 49th Venice Biennale. Muniz was the subject of a documentary film titled “Waste Land”, which won the 2010 Sundance Audience Award for Best Film and was nominated for an Academy Award. In his artwork, iconic images from art history and other sources are transformed in scale and into unexpected materials: sugar, chocolate, ketchup, diamonds, dust and garbage – in a process culminating in a new photographic image.
